Economists, socialists, egalitarians, all direct the same reproach against landed property, that of charging for something that it has no right to charge for.
Frédéric Bastiat
Economic Harmonies
After exposing the mistake that both economists and socialists are making when they analyse property, Frédéric Bastiat shows how Pierre-Joseph Proudhon deducts logically from this that landed property is illegitimate, for which he is not blamed unduly because his logic is properly deducted from the initial mistake.
However, he insists that Proudhon cannot claim victory and that the mistake consisting in lumping together value and utility is indeed shared by the three schools of thought, which is not sufficient to be accepted and that this mistake deserves redress.
