Not only Tuscany but Paradise itself would barely be charming if I did not met a friendly soul there.
Frédéric Bastiat
Complete Works, Volume 7, pages 419 to 420 (in French)
October 28th, 1850
This second letter to Opprandino Arrivabene is not of much interest apart from the fact that it was written less than two months before Frédéric Bastiat passed away and that he announces his departure from Pisa to Rome.
At the time, he was suffering so much that he could not work anymore. However, he still had some hope to go back to France in the following spring. Eventually, it was his last voyage.
I note today’s quote because it illustrates the fact that man is a social animal and that he needs others in order to appreciate life to the full. This explains the interest one can have in studying economics or catallactics, which are but one of the points of view allowing to study man in society.
