TO MR. PAILLOTET – 8

See you in Heaven, I am tired.

Frédéric Bastiat
Complete Works, Volume 7, pages 443 to 444 (in French
October 11th, 1850

I hesitated to extract the following quote from this eighth and last letter to his friend Prosper Paillotet: “All ma fortune and everything I have is protected by our tariffs”. This is yet another proof, albeit not really necessary, that Frédéric Bastiat was a dedicated liberal by conviction and for the sake of humanity rather than personal interest. However, I preferred to choose these last seven words: “See you in Heaven, I am tired” that I find admirable to conclude these seven volumes of the Complete Works.

As for me, I am not tired yet but I appropriate his words nonetheless, at least for a certain time. I need to undergo open heart surgery in July and shall therefore refrain from publishing for a few months. For now, I ignore how studentofliberty.com will evolve in the future, maybe by publishing quotes extracted from Human Action by Ludwig von Mises?

In any case, I am rather satisfied by the more than five hundred quotes I have extracted from my re-reading of the Complete Works by Frédéric Bastiat in seven volumes (1862-1864) over the last five years. I invite you to stroll among them however you fancy, without omitting to delve into the corresponding original texts, which have been written in a much more beautiful way than I can write and by a mind way more superior than mine.
