…the intervention of the legislator to level wealth by taking from some what is needed to gratify others is communism…
Frédéric Bastiat
Part 7 of 7
Pamphlets
As a conclusion, Frédéric Bastiat reminds us through today’s quote on what point Adolphe Thiers and himself are in agreement in order to remind him the reason for his writing the letter, which is to implement free trade and stop supporting protectionist measures. This conclusion is the opportunity to recap all essential ideas in his reasoning in order to convince the recipient of his letter.
It is also an opportunity for me to reassert that his objective is not merely material (although himself does not sees any issue in his contemporaries becoming richer) but is also a peace objective and that liberalism embodies the solution for “the closing forever of the abyss of revolutions” (which ressemble civil wars indeed).
